Bongo Ball invades the Pennington Center

The sound of compressed air cannons filled the courts of the Pennington Student Activity Center as students took aim at each other during the Bongo Ball event.

Bongo Ball, held on Jan. 24 from 2-8 p.m., provided students fast-paced, paintball-like action. The event, sponsored by Campus Activities Board (CAB), was played on a basketball court, laden with inflatable barricades.

According to the Coordinator of CAB Todd McElroy, approximately 200 students played in the event with another 200 showing up to watch.

“I think it went very well. We had real good participation,” said McElroy. “Students seemed to enjoy themselves. I think it was a rather popular event.”

Dylan Richardson, road manager for Cutting Edge Productions, explained that the rules to Bongo Ball were simple and easy to follow.

“Rules of Bongo Ball are one ball at a time in the gun,” said Richardson. “We do single elimination death match which means five versus five teams. First team to have all their players eliminated is the losing team.”

Students were able to create their team and sign up to participate at the event. Some students came with teams formed prior to the event, while others made pick-up teams while watching.

Aaron Eskine, a junior business management major, participated with a pick-up team called Team Got ‘Em that he met while watching the matches.

“It’s a great way to meet people on campus,” said Eskine. “It’s definitely exhilarating, you know, adrenaline is going through your body. It’s fun.”

Another student, Kelly Altazin, a sophomore English major, also participated as part of a pick-up team and described the game as being both exciting and tiring.

“It actually was kind of tiring,” said Altazin. “You wouldn’t think that those things, even though they shoot compressed air, wouldn’t be that heavy, but it has a pretty decent weight to it.”

CAB provides students the opportunity to participate in a number of interesting events. McElroy said that CAB will continue to provide students with events that continue to make campus a fun and entertaining place to be.

“We’re just trying to get people out. Let them have a good time. Just keep campus active and a vibrant, live place,” said McElroy.
