    Student novelist featured on MTV

Student novelist and Resident Assistant Alex Rogers, a senior majoring in business, is being featured in a documentary produced by MTV entitled “Bullied.”

The documentary aired in Europe on Jan. 24 and is available on YouTube in the United States. The film was produced with collaboration between MTV International and London based Firecracker Films. Rogers was asked to participate via his Twitter account because of his book, “I’m Only Human After All” which also focuses on the issue of bullying.

“The reason they wanted me for this film was for an interesting angle,” said Rogers “This is because I wrote a book on bullying, but in my current life I’m not bullied so they wanted me to be in the conclusion of things. Show how life gets better for people who are oppressed via bullying and other injustices.”

Rogers explained that the film gets people from all over the world to share their experiences with bullying. By doing this, it allowed a number of people to come together and form a connection over the issue.

“It definitely helps when you are intertwined with other people with the same audience because it’s a common bond we all share,” said Rogers. “Once we’re all glued together, we kind of just grow.”

According to Rogers, the filming process took approximately four months, starting in September and ending in late December. Rogers filmed his own experiences over that four month period and submitted it to the producers.

“I traveled to Atlanta on a business trip for a business convention and it was during the time of filming so I just filmed what I was doing in there and why I was there,” said Rogers. “I had an agent that told me what shots they wanted and I’d send them the footage and they would evaluate it.”

Rogers believes the reach of the film is global as the issue of bullying is not going away. This is precisely why he chose to start his career with a book on the topic.

“There’s a lot of issues going on with social injustices to other people groups whether it’s by race, sexual orientation or people flat out bullying one another,” said Rogers. “I wanted to have a book that could touch on those common grounds on a subject that most people could relate to.”

For Rogers, the film has expanded his own following and increased the awareness of his experience and his own work. Rogers commented that, through working on this project, he has become connected with the other people featured in the film.

I don’t remember this guy in the film? I went to west islip schools and was bullied by the kids AND the administration. I was one of the main speakers in the film, I’m even the thumbnail for the trailer. Thanks, west islip. This is hysterical.
