    Dancers needed for Fanfare event

Southeastern’s department of fine and performing arts is holding auditions on Thursday, Apr. 14 at 6:30 p.m. in the Kinesiology and Health Studies Building, Room 153 to prepare for Fanfare this coming October. Due to the continuing construction, the entrance is on the left going through the gym.

“I am in the planning stages now, but [the event] is not going to be a concert format in the meaning that there is a lot of dances and they are all connected, independent of one another,” said Dr. Martie Fellom, professor of dance. “This program I am planning is going to be an event where there should be some connection between all the pieces.”

Those wanting to audition can be Southeastern students or junior and seniors in high school. Individuals are asked to have experience in the craft of dance, because the choreography is going to be demanding. According to Fellom, the event is very serious, so chosen dancers must follow through,  and always be present at all rehearsals.

If chosen, those auditioning must be prepared to enroll in one technique class for the fall semester. Including ballet 1 on Tuesday and Thursday from 9:30-10:45 a.m., Jazz 2 on Monday and Wednesday from 11:00-12:15 p.m. and Modern 2 on Tuesday and Thursday from 12:30-1:45 p.m. For junior and senior high school students instead of enrolling in a technique class, they must be currently studying at a particular dance studio weekly.

Southeastern students will also be able to receive a one-hour credit for this Fanfare performance through rehearsal time and the final performance. This class will be Dance 106 for freshmen and sophomores and Dance 406 for juniors and seniors.

People wishing to try out should arrive early at 6:15 p.m. to fill out forms and also be prepared by bringing paws also known as foot undies, unless wanting to dance barefoot. The auditioning process will begin with a short warm up, then go through different movement phases which spotlight technique or onstage presence.

There is not a set number of people the department will be accepting, depending all upon the talent and abilities of the people auditioning.

“I want to audition because this Fanfare event not only includes the Southeastern community but also the Hammond community,” said Sarah Gregoire, a sophomore math education major.

The Fanfare event people will be auditioning for is to be performed for the public on Oct. 27, but the location has yet to be determined. Since the location is undecided between Vonnie Borden Theatre and Pottle Auditorium, it has been difficult deciding a theme and assembling choreography.

The performance will include works from four choreographers, mainly seniors including Diamond Williams, Kaleigh Brandt, Ashli Tallo and Giara Major.

“What’s exciting about the dance program here at Southeastern is that the people who dance with us are doing it out of passion because we have no dance major here,” said Professor Fellom.
