The NAACP hosted a talent show on Wednesday, Feb. 23. Talents gathered to showcase their skills in the Pottle Music Auditorium. From poetry to singing to dancing, students displayed their amazing talents on the stage. There were a total of 11 talent show acts. There were also a few performances by local artists, including ones by Rico Got ‘Em and J.B. August.
The night was introduced with a tribal style dance and then a performance by Rico Got ‘Em. Following were the first three talent acts and then a performance by local rapper J.B. August. After a few more acts and an intermission, Rico Got ‘Em came out again to close out the performances.
The auditorium was packed and everyone in the audience was very supportive of the performers. The NAACP also did something new this year to involve the audience. They included a People’s Choice award, in which a prize was given to a performer based on audience approval. The crowd cheered loudest for the talent of Spider, who performed a rap with the catch phrase “Speak gutter gutter,” to which the audience chanted along. He received a photo shoot courtesy of the NAACP.
There were three winners of the talent show for dancing, singing and miscellaneous categories. The winner of the miscellaneous category was Ms. Troy, who recited an original poem entitled “Sweet Music” which she dedicated to her crush. New Orleans dance group F.N.S. took the dance category. Dynnishea Jones won the singing category. All three winners received a one-hundred dollar check.
