The Southeastern chapter of Up ’til Dawn held its annual Letter Writing Campaign as part of Homecoming week to help raise money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
The event was held on Wednesday, Oct. 24 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. in the Student Union Ballroom.
“Up ’til Dawn is a national organization. There are hundreds of chapters around the country. We happen to have one at Southeastern,” said Hayley Arceneaux, the president of Southeastern’s Up ’til Dawn chapter. “This is the fourth year that we have been having the Letter Writing Campaign. Two years ago we raised about $5,000, last year we raised about $8,700, and we’re hoping to raise a whole lot more this year. All the student organizations are participating as part of Homecoming week. They’re writing letters, addressing envelopes, sending family and friends information about St. Jude and asking for donations.”
At the event, Up ’til Dawn provided free food, games and prizes. Some of the games included root beer pong, bingo and Ships and Sailors, which helped to entertain a ballroom full of students.
“It’s great seeing all the student organizations come out and support this cause I feel and the whole club feels so passionate about,” said Arceneaux. “I know that by the little letters that we write, we are really making a difference and improving survival rates and helping more kids live.”
According to Arceneaux, over 8,000 letters were mailed out because of this event.
The Southeastern chapter of Up ’til Dawn currently has 60 members. For more information on the organization, visit the Up ’til Dawn Southeastern Facebook page.
