From Start 2 Finish grants wishes

From Start 2 Finish recently allowed students to “Make a Wish” in hopes of raising awareness of their organization and making some students’ wishes come true.
“We go volunteer at animal shelters and nursing homes,” said Jamila Sherman, a junior majoring in marketing and president of From Start 2 Finish. “We do food drives. We donate to children and schools and stuff like that, and sometimes we host forums and discussions on campus to help better the student body also. We try to do a little bit of everything.”
The service organization raises money for larger organizations such as Susan G. Komen for breast cancer awareness and also accepts donations for their organization’s funds.
“We started it off as a way to get our name out there on campus, and it’s actually become our annual activity that we do every semester,” said Sherman about Make a Wish. “We basically just use this as an opportunity for students to Make a Wish, something they would like for the semester, either a gift card to Applebee’s or a date for next weekend. We normally do actually grant them, even if they are pretty outrageous.”
According to Sherman, the organization accepted approximately one hundred wishes in the War Memorial Student Union on Wednesday, March 27.
“Normally we just dip into our budget. If it’s something monetary, we just pay for it,” said Sherman about granting wishes. “If somebody just wants a friend for a day, then we’ll have a member volunteer to be their friend for a day. We decide as an organization which ones are actually reasonable for us to grant and which ones we would like to grant. Then we normally make them come true.”
In order to select the five wishes that will be granted this semester, each From Start 2 Finish member randomly selected three wishes at the start of the meeting, and then the group discussed them until a final five were selected.
“It feels good because at the end of the day [giving back] is our main goal as an organization, and it also feels good that other people see us making other people’s wishes come true and want to become a part of it also and help better the community also by seeing us set the example,” said Sherman.
From Start 2 Finish meets every Wednesday at 5 p.m. in Fayard Hall, Rm. 227 to discuss service projects and future forums to educate the student body. The next meeting will be a forum held on Wednesday, April 9 at 5 p.m.
“We will be granting the wishes at our forum on April 9,” said Sherman. “We’ll be discussing the social media you, how the persona that you put online can set you back in real life. Would you marry the social media you? Would you hire the social media you? Having trouble finding love? Let’s pull up your Instagram and see if that’s one of the reasons.”
