Homecoming court and freshman senators decided

The Student Government Association (SGA) announced its winning Freshman Senators, Joel Roberts and Kala Smith, in the Student Union after the conclusion of the elections on Wednesday, Sept. 26.
Also announced was the 2012 Homecoming Court. The Beau Court includes Ashish Acharya, Joshua Allen, Devonte’ Bryant, Winfred “PJ” Hills Jr., Jeremy Lloyd, Brandon “BK” Nettles, and Hunter Robinson.
The Sweetheart Court is comprised of Shawndreka Gatlin, Kaylee George, Kenneesha Johnson, Jessica B. LeBlanc, Kristen Phelps, Abbey Smith and Shanel Wolf.
Voting was held by the SGA, Monday through Wednesday in the Student Union. Over 1,600 ballots were cast by students of all classifications in the elections.
Both elected Senators said they did not expect to win.
“No, I only know a few people on campus and just thought I’d give it a shot,” said Kala Smith, a marketing major.
However, both have big ideas for Southeastern.
“I would like to see the expansion of the Pennington Student Activity Center because of the overpopulation and crowdedness during the school year,” explained Joel Roberts, a kinesiology major and member of the Delta Tau Delta Fraternity. “We need to see students take advantage of each of the services that each of us pay for in our fees and tuition.”
Branden Summers, president of SGA, recalled his freshman year when speaking of the senators.
“I, myself, ran for freshman senator and was elected,” he said. “I know how they will feel once they step into SGA.”
The newly elected senators say they hope to get more students involved and represent the largest class on campus as well as they possibly can.
As for Homecoming Court, the fourteen Beaus and Sweethearts smiled from ear to ear as their names were called. Students, who voted, waited in anticipation to hear their picks announced.
Kaylee George, an early childhood education major, member of the Southeastern cheerleading team and an Alpha Omicron Pi pledge, was ecstatic to find out she had made the Sweetheart Court.
“I was so excited to win,” she said, smiling the entire time. “I was so nervous before, but now that I made it I can’t even explain.”
All Beaus and Sweethearts must now wait for the final announcement of King and Queen, which is given to the Beau and Sweetheart with the most votes.
King and Queen will be announced on Oct. 27 during halftime of the Homecoming football game.
