Corsentino named first Miss Phi Beta Sigma

The stage of the Student Union Theater shined with the star talent and beauty of three contestants during the first Phi Beta Sigma Beauty Pageant.

The pageant was held on Tuesday, March 27 at 7 p.m. At the end of the night, only one winner could be crowned and 19-year-old Lexi Corsentino, a Baton Rouge native, sophomore mass communication major and member of Phi Mu, left her mark on the stage and was awarded the night’s top honors.

“I’m excited! I had no idea,” said Corsentino after receiving her crown. “You really got to mentally focus yourself and, when you do that, everything really falls into place.”

The pageant consisted of competition between Corsentino, sophomore family consumer science major Courtney Rogers and freshman family consumer science major Chelsea Leufroy.

The contestants were graded on a scale of 1 to 100 and competed in three competitions on stage. The swimsuit competition gave the contestants an opportunity to show off their beauty and confidence to the judges. During the talent competition, each contestant took a turn showing off their unique talent to the judges. Corsentino performed a dance that received the talent award from the judges. The final part of the competition consisted of an evening gown and onstage question asked by the panel of judges. Rogers received the intellect award from the judges for her response to a question on corporal punishment.

Pageant coordinator Shannon Grover, a graduate student and president of Phi Beta Sigma, explained why his fraternity decided to host the pageant.

“It was something that we always wanted to do and it was even bigger for our chapter to get their first annual one. I had the support to do it so why not?” said Grover. “I’m very happy. She worked for it. She earned it.”

As Miss Phi Beta Sigma, Corsentino will receive a scholarship and will attend the fraternity’s upcoming events.

“I think people should do it,” said Corsentino when asked why more women should participate next year. “They are an absolutely wonderful organization and I think everyone would have so much fun doing it.”
