Next generation of SGA executives announced

The Student Government Association (SGA) announced the winners of the chief justice, vice president and president positions for 2013-2014 in the War Memorial Student Union on March 27 at 4:30 p.m.
Mary Takewell took the position of chief justice, holding 52 percent of the vote, while Jeff Simmons won the vice president seat over Christopher Simoneaux, also taking in 52 percent of the vote.
“It was very nerve-racking,” said Takewell after hearing of the results. “I can only thank my sisters for all of their support through this whole process. I’ve been a bundle of nerves all week, but they’ve really been rallying around me and helping me stay sane.”
Gregory Crovetto was announced as the new SGA President, beating out opponent Kayla Turner with 54 percent of the students’ support.
“I am very proud and excited to be elected SGA President,” said Crovetto. “I think all candidates ran good races, and it was a positive step for SLU to have more people involved in the campaigns and the election process.”
Voting was up 38 percent this election cycle when compared to the last SGA elections, which proved to be dismal in student support. According to data provided by SGA, 1,614 students voted this year.
Freshmen were counted as the highest voting block with over 400 students supporting candidates. Graduate students voted the least in the election with fewer than 60 ballots cast.
When broken into college categories, students within the College of Arts and Humanities voted the most out of all of the seven colleges, while the least amount of support came from the College of Education and Human Development.
