Dr. James Kirylo releases book on ‘Teaching with Purpose’

A teacher needs intimate knowledge of not only their subject matter but also the students they teach. This is a central idea of Dr. James Kirylo’s newly published book “Teaching With Purpose: An Inquiry into the Who, Why and How We Teach.”

Professor of teaching and learning Kirylo used his experiences of the variety of teaching environments he worked in as inspiration for his writing.

According to Kirylo, once the book was started, the writing process and research involved took two years.

“Writing any book is a challenge,” said Kirylo. “This is because it requires large amounts of time, research, family support, professional support, a commitment to the process and a passionate belief in what one is writing.”

According to Kirylo, being a teacher requires far more than knowledge of a subject or an academic discipline. It requires the ability to form relationships with students and inspire them to reach their fullest potential. Each student holds a different set of gifts and talents and a teacher must be able to connect with all of them.

Kirylo believes these connections are some of his most meaningful teaching experiences.

“The most fulfilling part of being an educator is the relationships I have developed,” said Kirylo. “I have made a positive impact on the lives of many people and that is deeply satisfying.”

In his book, Kirylo lists what he considers the five main components of knowledge that all teachers need: knowledge of students, subject matter, teaching methods, learning and classroom management.

According to Kirylo, a teacher’s knowledge of these five components is a reflection of their effectiveness as a teacher.

“The chief task of the teacher is to inspire,” said Kirylo.  “Inspirational teachers ignite students to aspire towards accomplishment. Teaching is also a political enterprise and whatever a class may discuss, it is important for the teacher to be well-informed and involved in the political process.”

The book is available in hard cover, paperback and e-book formats.  It can be ordered from the publisher Rowman & Littlefield, Amazon and the bookstore.
