Women’s College basketball
On Saturday, the Lady Lions (2-14, 1-8 SLC) continue to fight for a win to keep playoff hopes alive after being defeated by the Corpus Christi Islanders (3-13, 2-7 SLC) 68-65 on the road.
Since the team’s first conference win against East Texas on Nov. 22, the Lady Lions have been on an 11-game losing streak, suffering a mixture of huge blowout losses and close defeats against conference opponents.
SLU, limping into the matchup against Corpus Christi, looked to score a win and break the unfortunate streak. They had a hot start with a consistent lead through the half, but the Islanders closed the margin with an 18-point run to take a 10-point lead over the Lady Lions in the third quarter, 51-41.
At the beginning of the final period, Southeastern fell behind but managed to slow down Corpus Christi and close in on the lead, trailing 66-61.
SLU ultimately came up short, losing to the Islanders by three points. Despite the loss, sophomore guard Eryn McKinze had a breakout game with 22 points, two assists and two steals against the Islanders.
The Lady Lions will have another shot at breaking the streak next at 6 p.m. this Thursday, Jan. 22, in a rematch against McNeese at the University Center. Fans can watch live or listen live on 90.9 The Lion.
Men’s College Basketball
Later on Saturday, the men’s team (5-13, 2-7 SLC) fell to the Islanders (3-13, 2-7 SLC) 68-56.
SLU has lost seven of its last eight games, dating back to its Dec. 13 victory over the HCU Huskies. Before they traveled to Corpus Christi, they lost to New Orleans in a buzzer-beater that sank them to the bottom of the Southland Conference.
The team couldn’t catch a grip against the Islanders, finishing the first half 20 points behind.
When the team came out in the second half, Southeastern gained momentum to close in on the lead, but time wasn’t on their side, and Corpus Christi maintained a double-digit lead, ultimately defeating the Lions by 12.
Despite the loss, three players for SLU finished the game scoring double digits. The fifth-year senior, Isaiah Gaines, led the team with 18 points, two blocks and two steals.
Next to him, sophomore forward Jeremy Elyzee scored 12 points and forced a single turnover, while junior guard Peter Hermschemeier scored 13 points and recorded a steal.
Baseball and Softball
As winter turns to spring and the football season ends, Southeastern softball and baseball seasons begin in February against non-conference opponents.
Next month, the Lady Lions will start their season in the NCFA Leadoff Classic against non-conference opponents in Clearwater, Florida.
Southeastern will play its first game of the season against Clemson on Thursday, Feb. 5, at 6 p.m. to start the tournament.
The baseball team kicks off its season with a three-game home series at the Alumni Field against Kent State. The first game is at 6 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 13.
Cheerleaders and Lionettes
Over the break, the Southeastern cheer squad and dance team won gold medals during the 2026 UCA & UDA College Cheerleading and Dance Team National Championship over the weekend at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.
Each team won gold in the Division I Game Day Finals. The cheer team recorded an average score of 91.6333 points, defeating Southland Conference rival Northwestern State in the cheer finals. The Lionettes recorded an average of 92.35 points, winning the dance finals.
This marks the fourth consecutive year cheer has claimed gold in the national and the fifth gold medal in the past six years. Combined, both squads have earned eight national titles in the past nine years.
