In its annual fashion, Southeastern students will once again be participating in Big Event, which is scheduled for Saturday, March 21.
The Big Event, which started at Texas A&M in 1982, began at SLU in 2011 as a way to show appreciation and gratitude to the local community. Ever since, Hammond has seen countless participants give back to the city and its residents in many ways from cleaning up litter to assisting with social programs that help those in need.
“The Big Event has been a valued part of campus tradition,” said SGA President Maria Nechaeva.
During Big Event, students who sign up will travel to businesses around Hammond and help out in any way they can. Emily Beswetherick, the director of traditions for the Student Government Association (SGA), advised wearing older clothes and close-toed shoes due to the amount of work that is to be expected.
“Those who are participating should expect to put some work in,” Beswetherick said. This attitude allows the students of SLU and the people of Hammond to foster a spirit of community and service.
The SGA hosts the event and welcomes anyone to participate in an impactful service event such as this. The goal is to make a meaningful and positive impact outside campus.
