The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi will be hosting their 16th annual “Homecoming Intramural Quiz Bowl Tournament” where students and faculty compete in a tournament of knowledge.
Phi Kappa Phi is an honor society on campus that selects those with exceptional academic achievements to join their organization. Phi Kappa Phi facilitates the quiz bowl every homecoming. At this event, students compete against faculty in a test of knowledge. Facility advisor for Phi Kappa Phi Dr. Joan Faust explains how the quiz bowl will run.
“The quiz bowl is a fast-paced, question-and-answer competition covering all subjects literature, mythology, science, technology, math, history, music, art and popular culture,” said Faust. “We pit two teams together of three to four people each. The tournament is a double-elimination contest divided into student, then faculty teams who compete against each other to determine the top student and top faculty team, then the championship match is between those two teams for overall quiz bowl champions. Top teams win a monetary award.”
“The quiz bowl began as another form of competition for students during Homecoming Week,” said Faust. “The Phi Kappa Phi “Homecoming Intramural Quiz Bowl” originated in 2001 from a grant we received from the National PKP office for the project. It was the first year of the return of football to campus, and we offer it as ‘another kind of competition’ during Homecoming Week.”
The quiz bowl was also used as a way for the organization to promote their goals of striving for academic excellence.
“The purpose of Phi Kappa Phi is to encourage and celebrate academic excellence in all fields of higher education, so this event helps us to fulfill that role,” said Faust. “The events have always been deemed exciting and fun.”
This year’s tournament will take place Tuesday, Oct. 3 in the Student Union Theater. The deadline to sign up to participate in the tournament is Sept. 26. The student competition beginning at 2 p.m. will start off the quiz bowl.
