Though the Lady Lions’ (13-3-3, 8-2-2 Southland) game against Houston Baptist (5-12-12, 4-7-1) fell flat on a 1-1 tie after double overtime, Southeastern soccer is firmly rooted in the No. 3 seed of the SLC Tournament this week.
The final game of the regular season was held Sunday, Nov. 3 in the Southeastern Soccer Complex. Without a cloud in the sky the day was calm, unlike the game transpiring on the field.
The match between the Lady Lions and the Huskies was high-pressure throughout. The first goal of the game was scored through a combined effort of junior defender Chelsea Villaescusa and sophomore midfielder Cheyenne Maxwell in the 33-minute. Villaescusa played a corner kick to Maxwell at the far post. Maxwell kept the ball from HBU defenders and landed the point very close to goal.
The Huskies tied the score in the 69-minute. Both teams created numerous opportunities to tip the balance, but the efforts of freshman goalkeeper Hope Sabadash and her senior HBU counterpart Shelby Horn kept the match at a draw. Even after two rounds of overtime, the score remained at 1-1.
“We had a lot of chances to score today, but we couldn’t find the net,” said head coach Blake Hornbuckle. “This is the second straight game where we created so many chances, and the ball will not go home. We gave them one chance to score in the second half, just one. We kept moving the ball and creating, but no one could land it in the net.”
Before the start of the match, All-Southland seniors Kelsey Salcido and Shanyce Shaw were honored as part of Senior Day. Both seniors are happy with the team’s performance this season, and look forward to the SLC tourney.
“I feel really good about going into the tournament,” said Salcido. “I feel like we have a really good chance to get a win there.”
“We just need to focus and win the game,” said Shaw.
The Lady Lions face the sixth seed University of Central Arkansas in the first round of the SLC Tournament this Thursday at 4:30 p.m. in Lake Charles. The Lady Lions are heading in with the momentum of a successful season behind them with eight conference wins and 13 overall. However, Hornbuckle and his team need to work on their scoring ability to take home the championship.
“It’s been a good year for us, but a great year means we’re winning games, not tying them,” said Hornbuckle. “If you can score two or more goal in conference you’re going to have a great year.”
