Heart of the Lion Series called short, tied 2-2

The Heart of the Lion Series came to an end on Oct. 31 due to inclement weather.  Game four was played on Oct. 30 with the Anchorman coming out with a 6-5 win over the Grit, bringing the series to a tie, at 2-2. The Anchormen were able to come off on top with the pitchers junior Andro Cutura and sophomore Mason Klotz.
The team came out to give a Halloween showdown for the fifth and last game of the Lion Series on Oct. 31, which was called in the third inning due to rain. The game was not completed.
“It has been a long fall. It has been 45 days. This is day 45 to finish up the fall; the guys have been working hard and getting after it,” said head coach Matt Riser. “They have been staying pretty serious for the most part, and I wanted these guys to have a chance to have a little fun on their own at the same time give back to the community.”
The Lions will have plenty of headway this season with new and veteran talent. Cutura was named the Southland Conference and Louisiana Freshman of the Year for 2012, and to the SLC Honor Roll for 2013. Klotz was named to the Louisville Slugger All-American team for 2013.
The team did not take themselves too seriously as they took the field for batting practice in their Halloween costumes.
“Yeah, it is Halloween so we wanted to spice things up a little and bring Halloween to the pat, so coach let us wear our Halloween costumes out for batting practice and in and out,” said Ryan Byers, a freshman out/in fielder.
Junior infielder Kevin Carr enjoyed celebrating Halloween with his team, and for fans who showed up they were treated to see their Lions run around in funny costumes.
“We had a good time,” said Carr. “We had some fans come out, and some little kids came out for Halloween. We were all dressed up in costumes, and we got to put on a little show by taking some batting practice and hit in some costumes. I know Jameson Fisher was in a Santa Clause outfit out there hitting home runs, so that was fun for the fans. I’m glad we can do that for them.”
Due to the rain the fifth game for the Lion Series was canceled because of field conditions. The game will not be made up. Before the rain wiped out the game, the Grit was in the lead (1-0) in the top of the third inning.
“I think it went fantastic, a very competitive World Series. When we picked the teams and looked at the rosters we knew it would have been a competitive series as far as the talent level,” Riser said about the fall series. “I thought it was split pretty evenly. The guys did a good job. They came out they fought hard every single day, you could see the competitiveness in last night’s game, [game 4], it got a little tight ,and the guys did a good job with the energy. Unfortunately we couldn’t get game five in, but I think overall this World Series was a great series.”
Byers agreed and feels his team did a good job.
“I think it turned out well. We had competitiveness on both sides [teams], and we just went at it every day and competed. I think it was a great world series,” said Byers.
“When you look at the big picture it turned out awesome. I think both teams had a lot of energy.  I think it really helped our team actually come together as one because I think we all figured out what we need to do as far as energy as far as competing and I think the fall World Series turned out great for us,” said Carr.
The Lions will start the season off away playing again Louisiana Tech on Feb. 14.
Our season home opener will be against Louisiana State University at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field on Feb. 19, at 6 p.m.
“I think once it’s all set in stone and the final line are on the field I think we got a chance to have a great club another championship ball club,” said Riser.
Car expressed optimism in the team and their ability to compete with top ranked teams.
“I feel great. I think we have a legitimate chance to compete with the very best,” said Carr. “I mean when LSU comes I think we are going to give them a run for their money. I think that’s how good of a team we have this year.”
