Tennis team loses match versus UTA

In women’s tennis, UT Arlington beat Southeastern this past weekend on April 16 at Stone Creek Club and Spa 7-0. Texas won all six matches in the singles competition, as well as all three matches in the doubles competition. Doubles competitions consisted of Southeastern’s Raissa Dias and Audrey Chelini vs. Linda Aqvist and Daiana Negreanu, Southeastern’s sophomore Nina Schmied and freshman Laura Verges vs. Maria Martinez and Nikola Matovikola, and Southeastern’s sophomore Isabel Brito and junior Morgane Dadot vs. Giada D‘ortona and Natalia Mayuk.

The closest score in doubles came from Schmied and Verges, who lost with a clean 8-6. Only Chelini brought her game to a third set against Negreanu, with the score of 6-1, 3-6, 10-8, UTA.

Dias, who is from Brazil and is a freshman and communication major, described the day as “difficult.”

“We were expecting more, we are just frustrated. This team (UTA) is the best one. They are winning the conference, so for us, it’s good to play them,” said Dias.

Dias also commented on her knee injuries affecting her, and head coach Jason Hayes also commented on the large amount of injuries in the season.

“We’ve always fought, that’s never been a problem. Unfortunately this year we’ve had too many injuries,” said Dias.  “We’ve been too banged up.”

Southeastern’s overall record for the year is 8-13, with a conference record of 2-9 after their defeat versus Texas State this Sunday. Their longest string of wins was a three-game streak in February and March.

Hayes also commented on the construction of the tennis courts on campus.

“You mean being homeless for two years? It’s been difficult, we’ve only had two courts,” said Hayes.

Hayes also described the difficulty of players being unavailable due to classes and other activities.

“You adapt and you overcome. We want to say a special thanks to all the people who provided this, these places let us practice.”

The places Hayes referred to included Oak Knoll Country Club, North Cypress Fitness Club, and Stone Creek Club and Spa. Practice courts were provided with no charge.

“We’re really looking forward to next year,” said Hayes. He also commented that he looked forward to when construction on the new tennis courts would be completed, which should be in 2012 at the latest according to previous reports.
