Southeastern faculty, staff and students gathered on April 28 for the official unveiling of “Aion,” the university’s new centennial monument.
Originally presented during the 2025 Division of Student Affairs Convocation, the monument was installed during the Fall 2025 semester between the Sims Memorial Library, D Vickers Hall and the Student Union.
Designed by X-TOPIA and CRG Architects, the sculpture features a series of green aluminum fins engraved with pivotal dates from the university’s history. The fins fan out along an organic, flowing sculpture.
In a release from the university, Aion serves as “a powerful metaphor for the interconnectedness of the Southeastern community—students, alumni, staff and faculty—across generations.”
The ceremony began with introductory remarks from university President Dr. William Wainwright, who introduced the event’s featured speakers.
“Aion represents an image of development for our state and for Southeastern, and I’m very fortunate to have had the opportunity to be a part of this project,” said Kyle Hidalgo, former Student Government Association president.
Cordula Roser-Gray of CRG Architects, one of the artists behind the project, attended the event to discuss the concept.
“Inspired by the Greek concept ‘ion’ meaning eternal, the project brings together key moments from the past…becoming a living timeline inviting reflection, conversation and discovery,” Roser-Gray said.
The unveiling concluded with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and a group photo to commemorate the occasion.
“Aion represents way more than just the last 100 years,” said current SGA president Maria Nachaeva. “It represents every student, faculty and staff member that makes up this university.”
