Graduate assistant brings passion for sports to journalism career

Kati Morse is at almost every single game for every single sport. She’s a force behind the scenes for lionsports.net articles, the player profiles and the SELU Athletics twitter @sluathletics. Following in the footsteps of women like Erin Andrews and Robin Roberts, a Southeastern alumni, she is dedicated to becoming a sports journalist.
“It’s really cool to see women like them, who really know their stuff in sports, you know they’re not just a pretty face, they really know their stuff,” said Morse.
Morse worked at the Southeastern channel for two and a half years. Beginning the spring of her sophomore year, she started out doing stories, got to the anchor desk and then moved onto sideline reporting.
She was the first female to do so for football games. In the future, she hopes to be reporting on the sidelines of college games.
“Although I would love to cover professional sports, I find that college sports are so much more exciting, there’s so much more heart in it. And it’s sometimes more fun to watch because these players aren’t making $10-12 million a year to play. They’re playing because they love it,” Morse said.
She knows exactly how they do it. She played softball at Southeastern for four years, and before that, four years at Ponchatoula High.
“I think that’s what gives me an edge as far as broadcasting or storytelling or reporting goes, because I did that, what I’m reporting on, I did that, you know? I rode a bus through the night to play double header the next day, I played injured, and I’ve had to pitch against really good teams,” said Morse. “I’ve had to wake up and go to workouts at six in the morning, take a shower, eat breakfast, go to class all day, then go to practice for four hours, study that night, and then wake up and do it all over again.”
After graduating with a degree in electronic media, she is now in her second semester of grad school majoring in organizational communication.
Morse was one of four female graduate assistants working in the sports information department.
She has a “hallway full of dads or big brothers and they always take care of me. I’m never bored; I’m always laughing with them,” said Morse. “I’ve always hung out with boys more, I guess because I’m a tomboy. I definitely have a lot more guy friends than girls too. So I’m in my element.”
When asked about the challenges that being a woman may bring, she replied, “There’s not very many challenges, except sometimes you’re the only girl in the room. You gotta deal with a lot of stinky, sweaty guys, and they’re bigger divas than girls sometimes. But, I really don’t know if there are any challenges except that there are very few of us. But just in the four years I’ve been here, we have more female graduate assistants in athletics, sports marketing, etc. So I would definitely say that it’s getting more balanced.”
Morse is clear about one thing: there is not much that can stand in her way.
