Lions picked second in preseason Coaches Poll

After being picked to finish second in the Southland Conference by the SLC coaches’ poll, the Lions were set to play their annual Alumni game on Saturday, where former players square off against the Lions’ current roster. Four innings into the game, with the Lions up 4-0, the Alumni game was rained out.

The Lions accumulated 88 votes in the polls following Texas State with 121, who was picked to win the SLC. Despite being picked second and losing some key players, the Lions still like their chance to wear the SLC crown at the end of the season.

“We lost a lot of guys last year,” said Artigues. “It makes me excited. It’s a combination of the coaches and the program and the kids we have coming in. Coach Rogers did a super job recruiting this year.”

“I think we have the right pieces to the puzzle to get them out there to replace those guys we lost,” said Artigues.

The Lions return with starters in the infield with Brock Hebert and Jonathan Pace, who were both named to the SLC all conference team.

“We have a great nucleus returning. We have Jonathan Pace and Brock Hebert returning to infield,” said Artigues. “We also have Stefan Lopez, Jason Greenleaf and Josh Janway returning on the mound and Jacob Fisher on the plate so we have a great nucleus to lead us this year.”

Pace agreed with Artigues on his belief that the team had something to prove this season in terms of replacing the players they lost.

“The main question about this season is we had so many guys leave. There is two ways to take that: you can take that as we lost a lot of talent, but you could also take it as we have a lot of talent coming in,” said senior infielder Pace. “If these guys can maximize their potential and be the best they can be, I think we will be better than we have ever been.”

The official start of the season for the Lions is a home game on Feb. 17 against Indiana State.

“I’m really excited about this season,” said Pace. “I can’t wait until the 17th to get started!”
