MANEiacs support make it tough on Lion opponents

Students at Southeastern looking for a way to show their school spirit and get involved on campus can check out the newly revamped MANEiacs. The organization is centered on athletic events on Southeastern’s campus. Carley Cryer, with Southeastern Athletics Marketing and Promotions, said the “mission is to promote Lion pride.”

Director of the Student Union Jonathan Ambrose said, “We want our students to show their support of loving this university by showing up at athletic games.” He wants the student section at every event to always be filled with students who “love green and gold.”

According to Ambrose, “no matter the performance of the team,” the students of that school should be out there to support them at the games. Their presence makes for a better atmosphere.

Two perks of being a MANEiac are special seating at football games and free entrance to special tailgating events. Each student who joins the MANEiacs also becomes a member of the Lion’s Athletic Association. They get to show their appreciation of athletics and are allowed attendance to events with coaching staff and athletes.

“We just got the student section moved to behind the visiting team in the football stadium,” said Ambrose. “If the students are loud and crazy, it makes a difference in the teams morale. Plus it’s a good excuse for students to come out and have a good time.”

The MANEiacs began and ended in 2006, fizzling out due to a lack of membership. This is the first year they are starting up again after their long hiatus.

“Right now, we are 42 members strong,” said Cryer. Eventually, they hope to reach “around 200 students,” said Ambrose. There are only a few requirements for becoming a MANEiac.

“It’s open to any student. There is a $10 payment fee which includes the students’ official MANEiac shirt,” said Ambrose.

According to Cryer, it also includes “other exclusive benefits, such as free food at select events and spirit items.”

MANEiac president, Jacqueline Hayes loves to support the Lions.

“They work very hard to compete for SLU and the least we could do as students is support them,” said Hayes.

“I already go to most of the games anyway so why not be an official supporter through the MANEiacs and  be surrounded by others who love SLU,” said Hayes.
