For years Southeastern has had various sports teams. From football and women’s tennis to volleyball and golf, Southeastern has a well-rounded athletics outreach. Now, with the help of two Southeastern students, they will venture into the waters of competitive bass fishing.
Known as the Bass Master Collegiate Bass Fishing Tournament, students and brothers Mike and Stephen Frenette represented Southeastern in the regional division competition in February and March in Arkansas.
“We want to thank Matt Webb for being the coordinator of our group,” said Mike Frenette. “He signed on as our advisor, which helped us get started with the club and compete in the tournament.”
The brothers went up against 36 teams from schools all across the nation, giving Southeastern national exposure and a chance to compete with schools that Southeastern has never had a chance to compete with.
The Frenettes have honed their fishing skills since their childhood. According to Michael Frenette, the brothers started fishing at the age of 2 and practically grew up on the docks of Venice, La. Their father, Captain Mike Frenette, also a well known angler, owns the prestigious family operated charter and guide business “Redfish Lodge of Louisiana,” which owes to the brothers skill at fishing as well. Mike also states that he literally grew up on the water with his crib being on his father’s charter boat.
Although not placing first, the Frenette brothers were able to place in 17th place, allowing them to go onto the national competition which Mike Frenette says was their main goal.
The brothers are moved on to compete in the National Division and, but lost to Stephen F. Austin University anglers Andrew Upshaw and Ryan Watkins.
