Badminton tournament brings out students and faculty

On Monday, April 16, Recreational Sports and Wellness hosted the first annual “Student Staff Games.” They took part in a badminton tournament in the Pennington Student Activity Center.

Badminton is a racquet sport played with two teams of two players. The net in the middle is like that of a tennis net, but a little higher up and the opponents hit the shuttlecock back and forth over the net.

There were twelve teams total entered in the tournament. Team NSAS won first place. Team members Suray Ayer and Bijay Bhottarai were thrilled to accept take the win, and second place went to Sudarshan Dhakal and Avin Sunuwar who made up team annapurnas.

“It was a fun competition, and I had a good time,” said Sunwar.

Dhakal expressed how he has always had a love for badminton since he was young and that he was glad to be able to put on a good game.

“Well it was something I played a lot in my childhood. It was awesome to reveal the same feeling of the game yesterday. We did our best to show a good piece of game, and it was so much fun. I thank the Pennington Center for organizing the tournament and I’m so ready for coming up events,” Dhakal said.

The team name, annapurnas, is the name of a mountain range in his native country of Nepal.

“Our team name was Annapurnas. This is actually a mountain range in our country. But, trust me it’s so beautiful that I cannot avoid myself to give my team this name. This makes me feel like I am as happy as the glittering mountains in Annapurnas, and swamp bowl is coming up next and my team will be with this same name,” said Dhakal

The winners were awarded a handful of prizes, such as lawn chairs, beach towels and a rolling ice chest that was given to the first place winner.
