On Thursday, Feb. 20, the Lady Lions traveled to the University of New Orleans to play against the Privateers. Thursday night’s game was held at the Lakefront Arena. The Lady Lions ended the game with a win against the Privateers and a final score of 76-59.
Southeastern’s (8-17, 6-7 Southland) win earned the Lady Lions a move up in the Southland’s league standings, which bumped the team into a tie for sixth in the SLC. The Lady Lions shot 49.2 percent (30-for-61) from the field.
Head Coach Lori Davis Jones instantly recognized the actions shown by the team in the beginning, which were continued throughout the game.
“I noticed as soon as the ladies came out they were more focused defensively and showed a great deal of confidence,” said Jones. “The defensive side was definitely shown greatly as well as the offensive side. The team was very consistent to hitting every shot and staying focused.”
Senior forward Aja Gibson along with three Lady Lions, put up high numbers in just 18 minutes. Overall, Gibson has earned the title of becoming the ninth player in history to receive 1,200 career points as well as being amongst all time leaders in rebounding and blocking shots.
The three Lady Lions to hit double figures were junior guard Symone Miller (15 points), sophomore forward Nanna Pool (11 points) and sophomore guard Erica Hernandez (10 points). Although junior guard Elizabeth Styles did not hit double figures, she helped with seven assists, and junior forward Adrina LaVern scored nine points and grabbed six rebounds.
According to Coach Jones previously broadcast strengths were effective in helping the team’s overall performance.
“The team definitely showed their effort and character traits,” said Jones. “And I know that along with good beliefs and success, our strengths will eventually outweigh our weaknesses.”
During the first half, the Lady Lions led 27-18 with only 5:46 remaining. Southeastern worked even harder in the second half leading 60-32 with 13:53 left as they continuously worked to uphold their position in leading throughout the duration of the game.
After a hard-fought win, the Lady Lions will face Northwestern State with Jones already having a positive strategy to earn another hard-earned victory.
“Our plan is to own the board,” said Jones. “We also plan to continue with excellent shooting and with playing great defense as well as offense.”
The Lady Lions are to return to the University Center on Thursday, Feb. 27 at 5:30 p.m. The contest will be broadcasted live in the Hammond area, KSLU-FM (90.9) and also online at lionsports.net.
