Lady Lions dominate in shutout victory

The Lady Lions soccer team dominated against Alcorn State and did not allow the opponent to gain a single goal.
The game versus Alcorn State took place on Sunday, Sept. 8, ending with a score of 9-0. All nine points were scored within the first 40 minutes of the game. With this success under their belts, the Lady Lions have won four of five season games thus far.
Head coach Blake Hornbuckle attributed the success to hard work in training and expressed pride in his team’s efforts.
“We work hard in training,” said Hornbuckle. “We work effective and smart in training. We’re just trying to get better every day. Our players have really bought into the system that we have in place, and we’re really proud of their effort today.”
Kelsey Salcido, senior forward/midfielder, and Casey Peacock, sophomore forward/midfielder, both scored more points than any other player on the team, earning two goals each during the game. Katie Noonan, Brianna Singh, Kayla Vera, Maddie Allen and Lauren Lorentz also helped build the tally with each scoring a goal.
Salcido said that the team’s success was a product of her teammates’ ability to communicate on the field.
“We were mostly passing through balls and connecting with each other, and we communicated a lot,” said Salcido. “My teammates did really good. We made sure to open wide for each other in passing, so we could have chances on goal.”
Hornbuckle expressed optimism for the next game that the team will face.
“We just gotta keep working, keep getting better, and hopefully we’ll have a good show next Friday,” said Hornbuckle. “We’re always optimistic. It’s a big thing. You always want to show your opponent respect, but you always want to be prepared to go in and win the game.”
The Lady Lions’ next game against the University of Louisiana-Monroe will take place on Friday, Sept. 13 in Monroe.
