Lady Lions return home with a 6-0 victory over Texas Southern

The Lady Lions won their third home game Friday evening, winning  6-0 in their first match against the Texas Southern Tigers.

Starting the match with a bang was junior midfielder Karly Dagys who scored a goal with assistance from junior midfielder Kerry McWhirter within the first four minutes of the game.

Keeping with the push, the Lions kept the heat on the Tigers, which afforded the Lions with a goal from forward Kelsey Salcido with freshman midfielder Jen Babcock getting the assist.

After countering pressure from the Tigers, the Lions kept the fight at their door when Dagys attempted to score a goal, but was ultimately saved. However, this did not stop McWhirter from coming in and following up with the volley, putting the score at 3-0, Lions.

The Lions scored their final goal of the first period when junior forward Maiya Cooper scored a goal at the 18th minute mark.  With the Tigers on the defensive, the Lions scored no further goals, sealing the first period.

The Lions jumped into the second period with force and, within the first 10 minutes, raised their lead to five, Salcido the beneficiary, raising her total season goals to three.

“I thought I did pretty good,” said Salcido. “I felt really composed. I really like to have the ball so my first goal was really exciting. [Texas Southern] did good. We’ve never played them before so we didn’t know what to expect from them.”

Still in the lead, the Lions effectively ended the day with the final goal by Cooper, earning her seventh of the season.

“Last game I was a little better, but today I was a little off,” said Cooper. “But team wise, we were really good. I was playing more off the team, and everyone was coming together so it went well.”

By the end of the day, the Lions had racked up 29 shots, 6 goals, 6 assists and 3 saves. This victory brings the Lady Lions to a 5-1-1 overall record.

Even with a 6-0 score, head-coach Blake Hornbuckle gave praise to the Tigers in their first match against the Lady Lions.

“I think Texas Southern came out really hard. They are a really athletic team,” said Hornbuckle. “They did some nice things on the field today, but we did a good job of controlling the flow of play I felt. Overall, I think we have put in consistent effort, but what we would like to see is to play more consistently in the attack.”

The Lady Lions will be playing Louisiana Tech next in an away game on Sunday. For more information on the Lady Lions Soccer team or for schedules, visit lionsports.net.
