The Lion's Roar

Second half surge carries Lions past Loyola, 99-69

Trent Hutchin scored 18 of his career-high 32 points in the second half and Southeastern Louisiana used stellar shooting in the final 20 minutes to pull away and defeat Loyola University, 99-69, Saturday afternoon at the University Center.

Jason Marks added a career-high 16 points on 8 of 9 shooting for Southeastern (3-1), which shot a season-best 62 percent (38-for-61) from the floor and won its 22nd straight non-conference game at home. All 12 players who played for Southeastern scored with the Lion bench chipping in with 30 points – all in the final 20 minutes.

“Trent had it today, he made some big shots and got us going” Southeastern head coach Jim Yarbrough said. “We were sluggish in the first half and our guys needed to talk (at halftime) to figure out what to do. We got good contributions from everyone in the second half and were able to come away with a win against a very good team in Loyola.”

Southeastern led 43-30 at halftime before putting the Wolfpack away in the second half, outscoring the visitors, 56-39, and placing five players in double figures. David Ndoumba recorded his second career double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds, while Rodney Jones and Roosevelt Johnson each came off the bench to add 10.

Hutchin, who became the first Lion to score 30 points in a game since Daryl Cohen scored 34 points against McNeese State on Feb. 1, 2007, finished 10-for-12 from the floor and 6-for-8 from behind the 3-point line. The senior nailed a pair of 3-pointers in a 9-0 run that saw Southeastern turn a 6-6 contest into a 15-6 lead with 13:26 to play in the first half.

Loyola, an NAIA school which counted the game as an exhibition, got as close as 15-10 on a pair of free throws by Ryan Brock with 12:25 remaining in the first half, but the Lions added a second 9-0 run by a Deshawn Patterson slam at the 11:09 mark to take a 24-10 lead.

The Lions put the game away in the second half, shooting 20-for-29 (69 percent) from the floor, including a combined 9-for-10 from the inside post trio of Johnson (5-for-5), Marks (3-fof-4) and Ndoumba (1-for-1) against the bigger Wolfpack which featured two players on the floor 6-foot-8 or taller.

“Loyola is a well-coached team and (Loyola coach) Mike Giorlando runs a good program,” Yarbrough said. “I was impressed with what they did in hanging around and running their offense. Our bigs really did a nice job against their post players, especially in the second half.”

The Lions pushed their lead to 57-36 with 15:53 remaining on a fastbreak layup by Jones, who was perfect for the game going 3-for-3 from the floor and 4-for-4 from the free throw line. Southeastern took its biggest lead, 91-59, when freshman Jeremy Campbell sank a jumper from the right corner with 4:49 remaining and had its 12th player – freshman Michael Harrel – enter the scoring column when he nailed a jumper with 37 seconds left.

Brock, who prepped at Brother Martin, scored 20 points to lead Loyola, which finished 21-for-57 (36.8 percent) from the floor and 5-for-16 (31.3 percent) from behind the 3-point line. Freshman Jamal Silas, a former O. Perry Walker standout, added 13 points off the bench for the Wolfpack while Corey Gray added 10.

Southeastern will return to action on Wednesday when it plays host to Dillard in a 7 p.m. contest. The game will be televised on a tape-delayed basis by the Southeastern Channel. Tickets are available by calling the Southeastern Athletic Ticket Office at (985) 549-5466.
