    Bass fishing club competes nationally

The Southeastern Bass Fishing Club has qualified for the College National Fishing Championship in July. The team participated in the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series South Super Regional Tournament last week in Guntersville, Ala. from Friday, March 9 to Saturday, March 10. Two team members placed in the top 50 bracket while four others placed but did not move to the College National Championship bracket.

Jonathan Byrd and his fishing partner Mason Taylor came in 27th place out of one hundred pairs. They caught five bass weighing 12 pounds and 10 ounces on day two and they had a weekend total of nine bass weighing in at 28 pounds and 8 ounces.

Currently the team has eight members and is not actively seeking new members, but according to Byrd, the team is always open to new members.

The College National Championship’s location has yet to be disclosed, however the date is set for July 25.

“After the national championship the top four teams advance to the bassmaster classic bracket, and from there it is a head-to-head style elimination that decides who goes to the classic,” said Byrd, a senior business administration major.

The 2013 Bassmaster Classic will be held from Feb. 22 through 24 in Grand Lake, Tulsa, Okla. The BOK Center will be the home of the Bassmaster Classic Expo, and fishermen will have the Grand Lake o’ the Cherokees to compete in.

“The Bassmaster Classic is pretty much the Super Bowl of fishing, and there is also a chance to win $500,000,” Byrd said.

Even though the location of the tournament is still unknown, Byrd and his teammate will have plenty of time to prepare.

“We’ll have to see where it is, and once I know where it’s going to be I’ll start looking at maps and weather patterns. We’ll probably go up there about a month in advance to get some fishing done,” said Byrd.
