    Flying high in the sky

At the LSU Twilight Track and Field meet, Southeastern saw several athletes step up, giving good performances and some setting new personal records (PR) as the indoor season comes to a close.
In the men’s 4×400 meter relay, the team of Shaquell Windley, Antonio Herbert, Billy Minnifield and Tremayne Daniels finished first in the finals (3 minutes 19.95 seconds).
“We had a great race,” said sophomore Billy Minnifield. “We are looking forward to going into conference this week.”
Antonio Herbert came in tenth in the men’s 60 meter dash preliminaries (6.86) and ninth in the semi-finals (6.88).
Nia Stewart finished fifth in the women’s 60 meter dash preliminaries (7.68 seconds) and fourth in the 60 meter dash semi-finals (7.67). Stewart also finished seventh in the women’s long jump finals (18-08.50).
“I’m pretty excited about it,” said Stewart about making the finals. “I’m hoping to run a little faster, but I’m tired right now because I jumped in the prelims and the finals in the long jump and ran in the prelims and the semi-finals in the 60. I did okay, but I didn’t do as good as I wanted to do.”
Coach Sean Brady, however, held both Stewart and Herbert out of the finals as a precaution.
“I pulled her from the finals because she’s had a little problem with the patella tendon in her knee, and although she’s doing really well, our big meet is next weekend,” said Brady. “It’s too much risk to just be in the mix. We’ve accomplished what we needed to accomplish today. She did some good work in the 60, she made two rounds, and she got some long jump work in.”
In the women’s 4×400 meter relay, the team of Dominique White, Lindsey Toups, Alicia Noel and Tess Mullins finished fifth (4:02.30).
Several individuals did well in their respective competitions as well.
Abram Taylor came in first in the Men’s 60 Meter Hurdles preliminaries (8.28). In the finals, Christian Chapman finished fourth (8.75) and Taylor dropped to eighth (18.19).
In the women’s high jump finals, Ikea Kaufman finished third (5-04.50). In the women’s triple jump finals, Bernadette Derosier took fifth (35-05.25).
In the men’s triple jump, Phillippe Moore finished fourth in the finals (46-00.50).
“I thought Ikea Kaufman performed well today in the high jump. From what I saw earlier, I was very impressed by what she did,” said Brady. “T.J. Herbert in the 60 (performed well). I thought that Abram Taylor in the hurdles was running pretty well. We had two of our male long jumpers make the finals and jump not great, but they performed well.”
Southeastern’s throw coach Lucais MacKay competed in the men’s weight throw unattached and won (63 feet, 2.25 inches), Jonathan Kinchen placed fourth with a distance of (59-07.00) and Jeff Milliron finished fifth (57-06.25), the latter two setting new PRs. Kinchen came in fifth in the men’s shot put finals (52-04.00).
“Jonathan Kinchen today in the weight throw was big for us,” said Brady. “So was Brett Olsen, who had several PRs in the shot and the weight.”
In the Women’s Weight Throw finals, freshman Jermisha Frazier finished fourth (54-06.00). In the women’s shot put finals, senior Shalicia Rochon came in fifth (43-02.50).
Tess Mullins and Teirral Thompson came in eighth (9.12) and ninth (9.28) respectively in the women’s 60 meter hurdles in preliminaries. Mullins finished the women’s 60 meter hurdles finals in sixth place (9.04).
Joseph LeGrange finished the Men’s 3000 Meter Run finals in fourth place, making a new PR (9 minutes 12.17 seconds).
“Overall, it’s been a productive meet,” said Brady. “We usually train through this competition. Mardi Gras kind of throws a kink in our training planning, yet we’re still having people perform really well considering that it’s been a while since they’ve competed and practiced at 100 percent. Our people are going to be ready next week. ”
This week the Track and Field team will travel to the University of Oklahoma for the Southland Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships on Feb. 22 and 23.
