Black Student Union hosts basketball shoot out for deserving family

Students came together last week to raise money for a family in need while enjoying a couple of games of basketball. On Thursday evening, the Black Student Union teamed up with PerPHection Entertainment to host the second annual Charity Shootout at the Kinesiology gym.
A DJ played music as the basketball games were played on the court. The first game played at the event was PerPHection entertainment against Unkontained entertainment. Although the game was close, PerPHection won 36-33. The second game was played by The Nu Omega Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, nicknamed the Nupes during the game, and Kappa Nu Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraterity, nicknamed the Ape Squad. The Nupes won against the Ape Squad 30-25.
“We adopt a family each semester and we donate everything that we get from concessions and admissions and it goes to the family,” said Adonica Reed, the president of the BSU and main organizer of the event.  “This year it’s going to a lady who is taking care of her six grandkids.”
There was a three dollar admission fee, which decreased to two dollars if you brought a canned good. Students could also purchase concessions during the game. This semester’s event was more successful than last semester’s, which raised $300 and over 100 canned goods.
“The charity game went amazing. So many people came out and supported the cause,” said Reed. “There were a lot of new faces, so we know we are reaching all parts of campus to get more campus involvement. We raised over $600 for our adopted family, which is through the North Shore Fuller House Foundation. This was double what we raised last semester. On concessions alone we raised over $90. We did collect over 75 canned goods for the food pantry.”
The turnout was greater than anticipated. Over 200 people came out to enjoy the event this semester, causing many people who attended to stand on the sidelines or along the walls.
“I love to see the student body come out and enjoy themselves. It takes a lot to put events on of this caliber, and just to see the turnout was amazing. So I would love to participate in another event such as this in the near future,” said Thomas Moore IV, president of the Kappa Nu Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and treasurer of the BSU.
“I didn’t get to play in the game this year because of a basketball injury earlier in the week, but after the game I received positive feedback from the guys who did get a chance to play, and they really want to do the event again,” said Moore. “The impression the game left on me was that, out of all our differences, we are able to come together for a purpose, enjoy the moment, as well as help others.”
