Despite an uninspired first half, the Lions scored 16 unanswered points, started by a 92-yard kickoff return for a touchdown that would spark the Lions to victory.
With the win against Northwestern State Demons, the Lions (5-2, 2-0) continued its win streak, now at four games. Before the game, head coach Ron Roberts spoke about the contest.
“This will be a great test for our football team,” said Roberts. “Northwestern State will be celebrating Homecoming, so we know we can expect a hostile environment.”
The Lions stumbled out of the gate, with their first three drives resulting in three punts. The Lions would pick up some momentum near the end of the half with an 82-yard drive for their lone touchdown of the half.
However, sophomore running back Xavier Roberson would have the most significant impact for the Lions according to Roberts. In the second half, the kick return specialist managed a 92-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.
“Xavier had the biggest play in the game with his kickoff return touchdown,” said Roberts.
Roberson’s energetic performance also received recognition from Southland Conference officials who announced Monday he earned the Southland Conference Special Teams Player of the Week award.
A rare turning point for the Lions in the form of a kickoff return touchdown left the team behind two points, at 14-16 with eight minutes left in the third quarter. On the ensuing kickoff, the Demons mishandled the kick, downing the ball on the one-yard line. Demons quarterback Zach Adkins would then fumble the snap, allowing the Lions to tackle Adkins in the end zone for a safety. The Lions would score on the next possession, putting the Lions up, 23-16.
Roberson gave the Lions their opportunity to come and take over the game and with Sutton and Bennett taking that opportunity, the kickoff return touchdown was not wasted.
“Great to get a road win in the conference,” Roberts said after the game.
The Demons would fight back, however. A touchdown gave them the opportunity for a tie, but the Demons would miss the extra point attempt. The Lions would seal the win with two touchdowns in the fourth quarter.
For the game, Bennett led the Lions with 46 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Sophomore running back Rasheed Harrell rushed for 28 yards and a touchdown. Roberson finished the game with 45 rushing yards on ten carries and sophomore running back Kody Sutton gained 25 yards with a touchdown.
“Jeff Smiley had several huge catches and Tony McCrea, special teams, was huge. Along with Kevin Harmon on safety,” said Roberts.
Jeff Smiley, sophomore wide receiver, had seven receptions for 87 yards. Tony McCrea, senior wide receiver, also contributed with four catches for 84 yards.
With Homecoming upon Southeastern, the team will take on Lamar, Oct. 26, at 7 p.m. in Strawberry Stadium.
