    Southeastern tops Tulane

Southeastern defeated Tulane 5-1 in an exciting matchup last Wednesday night. The game, which was moved from Tuesday due to weather, was played at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field. This was the second meeting of the two teams, with Southeastern taking the first game earlier this season 6-3.

This was not an average middle-of-the-week game. There was some personal history going into this game. Head Coach Matt Riser played baseball for Tulane and even went with them to the College World Series in 2005. However, Riser would not let emotions have any effect on the game.

"Our first time go-round, as a first time head coach, it was special. This time it is just another ballgame for us," said Riser.

After two scoreless innings, the Lions were able to put a run on the board with a single to right field from Andrew Godbold. The Lions then scored in the next three innings to put Tulane in a hole which they were never able to escape. Southeastern earned itself a five-run lead before Tulane answered with a run of their own at the top of the sixth.

The Lions were dominant on both sides of the ball. Tulane was only able to muster four hits due to an impressive performance by the Lion's defense. Offense was rolling just as smoothly for Southeastern. Every starter for the Lions recorded at least one hit. Second-baseman Kevin Carr led the team with three hits.

Junior Kyle Keller started on the mound for Southeastern. Opposite him was Zach Flowers from Tulane. Keller's fortitude was tested in the seventh inning when he faced loaded bases with one out. He was able to pull through and finish out the inning without allowing a run. The right-hander only allowed one run off of three hits during his seven innings on the mound. Keller was awarded the win for his efforts, bringing him to 3-2 this season.

"Tonight I felt like I did a good job at throwing strike one," said Keller. "That helped me do what I wanted to do from there."

Gaining momentum is vital to the Lions right now as they will next face Southland Conference foe, Incarnate Word University, in a three-game series. IWU is a fresh face in the conference, having joined in 2013.

"It's going to be a battle," said Riser. "Now we have to get back to work and execute Friday. It will be a tight game if we don't."
