Lady Lions struggle in conference play

The losing streak continues as the Lady Lions (5-9) struggle in conference play, now 1-5 after home losses to Sam Houston State (8-9, 4-2) and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (11-6, 4-2).
The Lady Lions had a good start in the beginning of the first set against the Lady Bearkats on Thursday, Sept. 27. It seemed like they were matching Sam Houston State point for point. However, by the end of the first set, the Lady Bearkats had taken over with a score of 20-25.
In the second set, the Lady Bearkats did not let up, dominating the second set with a score of 13-25.
The Lady Lions seemed to be catching up in the third set. There was a dispute at first over a point as to whether it should be given to the Lady Lions or to the Lady Bearkats. The point was awarded to the Lady Lions, but the Lady Bearkats came back to get the next point and left the third set with a score of 22-25.
“To improve on the next game, we need to improve on our consistency,” said senior defensive specialist Taylor Buckner.
The team is relying on many freshmen, and when Buckner was asked if this played a major role in the game, she stated that they don’t use that as an excuse. She thinks that all the new girls have learned head coach Geno Frugoli’s technique very well.
“We just need to get some more good practices in because there is another tough Corpus Christi team coming in,” said Frugoli as to how he was going to prepare for their next game and improve on their previous score. Frugoli attributed the game loss to ball control.
The Lady Lions were still unable to stem the tide as they fell to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 22-25, 25-20, 23-25 and 25-27. Even though the Lady Lions had a season-high 15 blocks, a career-high in kills (18) for freshman opposite hitter Haley Satterwhite led the Islanders to victory.
The Lady Lions will now face Jackson State and Nicholls State on the road before returning to Hammond to play Grambling for a rescheduled match after Hurricane Isaac on Tuesday, Sept. 9 at 7 p.m. in the University Center.
