Lions earn fourth SLC Championship title

The Lions Golf Team bounced back after a slow fall season to win the 2013 Southland Conference Championships at Stonebridge Ranch Country Club in McKinney, Texas.
The team earned a trip to the NCAA Regional’s with a 13-point win and four of their five players finishing in the top six.
“We had four guys in the top six this week, anytime that happens, you’re going to win a golf tournament,” said Head Golf Coach Tim Baldwin. “We’ve had a great spring. We’ve had two other wins, and we’ve had a bunch of top fives. Our whole motive this spring was to gain momentum and win the conference championship, and we saw it happen.”
“Four players finishing inside the top six is a great accomplishment in the conference championship,” said Grady Brame, a sophomore who finished sixth overall. “It just shows the depth that we have on our team. The even par round we shot in the last round was exceptional.”
The team’s only senior, Rhys West, finished first overall and earned his first college level win. He finished with a 4-over 220, becoming the fourth player in Southeastern’s history to earn a medal at the Southland Conference Championships.
“I think in the fall season a lot of the boys were very much down and out and this spring semester, through hard work, we turned it around,” said West. “Hopefully the momentum we’ve created here will carry through regional’s and make it to nationals.”
The Lions finished with the lowest score on two of the three days, and finished at even-par overall on the final day.
Freshman Eamon Bradley played his first Southland Conference Championships, finishing third overall with a 9-over 225.
“To shoot the scores that we did on that final day, to shoot level par as a team, is quite exceptional and I think that’ll help us at regionals,” said Bradley. “I think we’ll go there with high hopes and hoping to win it.  Not just getting nationals, but hoping to win regionals.”
Freshman Nicholas Inderthal recorded a score of 76-79-72-227, sophomore Grady Brame posted 76-78-73-227 and sophomore Batiste Courtachoun posted 76-82-79-237.
The Lions golf team now faces their fourth consecutive trip to the NCAA Regionals, where they hope to perform as well as they did at the Southland Conference Championships and pull out a victory and a trip to Nationals.
“We have a lot of confidence going in, so we are looking to book our ticket to the NCAA Championship,” said Brame.
The NCAA Regionals are scheduled for May 16 and 18.
