Win streak snapped in loss for Lady Lions

A first half goal was not enough for the Lady Lions (5-3) as they allowed the Lady Bulldogs of Louisiana Tech (7-1-2) to get the comeback victory, with two goals in the second half.
The loss snaps the Lady Lions four game winning streak. Pushing forward in the final minutes of the game, they were unable to find the equalizer and finishing touch that left them after their first goal in the 24th minute of the game.
“We just have to be more aware of tracking players when they’re moving off of the ball,” said head coach Blake Hornbuckle. “We have to be aware of communication. I think if we do that, it’s going to tighten up a lot of things that we lost focus on for about a 15 minute span that was really the difference in the game.”
Senior forward Maiya Cooper took the loss positively, seeing the opportunities that a loss like this can offer.
“We just have to learn from our mistakes today and push forward,” said Cooper. “This isn’t the last, so we just have to use this to our advantage. We have to work off of it, watch film about it, see what our mistakes were and pick up from that.”
The game was back and forth until the second half. Louisiana Tech dropped their defensive pressure, which caused trouble in moving the ball higher up the pitch for Southeastern. The long balls being sent towards the opponent’s goal were only finding Lady Bulldogs.
Louisiana Tech found the net in the 57th minute during a breakaway chance. They would take the lead 13 minutes later from a cross.
“We kept trying to go over instead of finding feet,” said Cooper. “It’s hard to gauge what a midfielder is going to do, so it was kind of hard to go off of that. But, I think we’ll learn off of this game.”
Hornbuckle agrees with Cooper, saying that the change to a more grounded attack was available, but the Lady Lions were simply off of their game. The Lady Bulldogs outshot the Lady Lions by seven and won eight corner kicks to Southeastern’s one.
“At first, [Louisiana] Tech was playing extremely high and we were getting in behind them with the long ball until they dropped off,” said Hornbuckle. “We needed to play underneath to our feet then turn and go at them. Our players had a hard time executing that ball underneath to their feet, which we can easily do, just not today.”
The Lady Lions finish their six-game home stand before entering conference play against Houston Baptist on Friday at 4 p.m. and Grambling on Sunday at 3 p.m.
