The Lion's Roar

    Athlete of the Month

The student-athlete of the month is senior track and field thrower Brett Olsen. Olsen was born in South Dakota, but was raised in California. Eventually, he migrated to south Louisiana, where he is currently pursuing a major in sports management. When he was younger, he became involved in track and field because he grew up watching his older sister participate in track.  It was also something he participated in during the spring months to pass the time when he was not playing soccer. He has been competing in track and field since high school and throughout his college career and plans to pursue a professional throwing career in the future.

The Lion’s Roar: Who is your inspiration?

Brett Olsen: My inspiration comes from a variety of sources.  First, my parents and family are a major source of inspiration.  My coaches I’ve had throughout college along with any other sports ideals also inspire me.  Any other people that are successful in their fields, anywhere from musicians to doctors to lawyers, inspire me.  I think inspiration should be pulled upon from many different aspects.

TLR: Why do you like track and field?

BO: Throwing is something I enjoy because it’s an art form.  It’s a struggle between power and finesse and challenges me as an individual.  It is me and the implement with no one else affecting the outcome besides me.

TLR: How do you feel this past season went?

BO: It did not finish exactly where I wanted as far as not qualifying for nationals, however, I contributed many points to our two team titles and accomplished some other smaller goals.  With everything taken into account, it was a good year, leaving me with points to build on.

TLR: What are your future plans and how do you plan to incorporate track into your life after college?

BO: I’d like to attend law school after my time at Southeastern and pursue a professional throwing career.

TLR: Do you have any meet-day rituals?

BO: No, not really, I just try and treat it as a normal day throwing and not be too tense.

TLR: What awards or recognitions have you won?

BO: While at SLU, I have been awarded six All-Conferences, Outdoor Newcomer of the Year, and made Southland All-Academic Team.

TLR: How does it feel to be named athlete of the month?

BO: It feels nice as a way to end this season.
