The Lions baseball team traveled to San Antonio, Texas to compete in a weekend series against the Cardinals of Incarnate Word. The Lions’ seven-game winning streak was soon broken by Incarnate Word after losing the final game of the series.

The past week was filled with wins from the Lions after defeating Alcorn State and Southern in midweek games at the Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field. During the game against Alcorn State, multiple runs were scored and the Lions managed to score three runs in the sixth. This was soon followed by additional runs added and starting pitcher Kyle Keller striking out eight batters in six innings. Southeastern earned a victory with a final score of 13-3, resulting in a fourth consecutive win for Southeastern.

Southeastern returned to the Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field to go up against Southern. The Lions managed to score a run within the first inning. Starting pitcher Pat Cashman earned his first homerun of the season. Five runs were earned as the Lions sent nine to the plate in the second inning. The game resulted in a 11-3 win over Southern.

Southeastern’s series opener took place on Friday at Dickson Stadium on St. Mary’s University’s campus. In the second inning, the Lions scored a run.  Outfielder Ryan Byers recorded his first homerun of the year with two-run homerun to left field in the fourth. In the bottom of the fourth, a run was pushed by Incarnate Word on pitcher Tate Scioneaux with a two-out single to right.

Lions earned the scoring position when Julian Service singled and Daniel Midyett doubled. An RBI single through the left side was soon followed by Kevin Carr. Carson Crites smacked a sacrifice fly ball to centerfield, allowing Midyett to score. In the end, Scioneaux earned the win, allowing two runs or four hits in seven innings resulting in a 5-3 win.

Saturday afternoon’s game was moved to Sullivan Field on Incarnate Word’s campus.

Single runs were scored by the Lions in the second and fifth innings. In the second, Byers led with a single and a steal of second base. On catcher Chris Eades’ one-out, infield single Byers advanced to third base. Byers was plated by infielder Brooks Morse with a single through the left side.

On the fifth, Midyett drew a walk along with stealing second base and scoring on Crites’ one-out double to left field. A 4-0 lead was gained by Midyett in the seventh and soon finished the game 3-for-4 with a walk, a pair of RBIs and two runs scored resulting in a final score of 4-1.

Sunday afternoon, the Lions returned to Sullivan Field to finish off their double header.

The Lions managed to score multiple runs including three in the third, one in the fourth, two in the fifth and four in the seventh. As the game continued to the bottom of the seventh, Southeastern was one out for a run-rule victory.

Ten runs were scored by the Cardinals over the final 1.1 inning of the game. Allowing four runs in one inning of work, pitcher Mason Klotz suffered the loss with a final score of 10-11.

The Lions return to action in Mobile, Alabama on Tuesday at 6 p.m. to pair off against South Alabama. For more information regarding Lions baseball, visit lionsports.net.
