Fremin recieves first test as new coach

The Lady Lions softball team started this season with the announcement of new head coach Rick Fremin.

Previously the Lions were coached by Pete Langlois for 20 years. Now, Langlois is an assistant to the Athletic Director for Facilities and Operations.

Fremin is from Belle Chasse, LA and began his coaching career at Belle Chasse High School. He previously coached at Millsaps College, Belhaven University and Jackson State University for over 15 years.

Fremin began coaching at Southeastern on August 3rd of this year. When asked how he felt about coaching at Southeastern, Fremin simply said, “I love it.”

“It’s a dream job for me because now I’m back home,” said Fremin. “I truly appreciate the people behind the scenes like the administration, athletic department and local people of Hammond who all extended a hand and welcomed my family and me.”

Fremin acknowledged the growth that he has seen in the players both on and off the field.

The only setbacks that he described were two injuries of freshmen, Hannah Gomez and Taylar Fuselier, who both broke their legs during the season.

“It’s great. He really pushes us to be the best we can be and he believes in us a lot,” said senior Amber Sather, first base designated hitter.

Sather admits that the biggest changes that she has seen in the team have been them moving at a faster pace.

“I think we’ve gotten better. We know more about each other, so communication wise, it’s helped us on the field,” said Sather.

Senior outfielder Katie Lacour, describes the adjustment of having a new coach during her senior year.

“For me, as a senior being with the old coach for so long then coming in with a new coach in my last year has been adjustment,” said Lacour. “I’ve really just tried to embrace what he’s thrown at us.”

The Lions played against East Central Community College on Friday October 16 at 3:00 p.m. at North Oak Park in Hammond. They lost to East Central Community College with a score of 3-18, despite hard work, endurance and a home run by Sather.

“Like tonight, we’re still trying to figure things out like the right combinations and line up, but we’ll figure it out by spring,” said Lacour.

It was a walk down memory lane as the team celebrated Homecoming week with the Alumni game on Saturday, October 17 at North Oak Park.

“I wanted to see everyone and have a good time,” said alumni of Southeastern Heather Sherrill. “It wasn’t about talent.”

Although no official scores were kept, the alumni and current softball players challenged each other in the non-traditional game.  The first inning was played like a regular game. The second inning was played in the style of one base softball. The third inning was played as backwards softball. The fourth inning was played as slow pitch softball and the final inning was played as partner softball.

The team will play Faulkner State Community College on October 23 at 3:00 p.m. in North Oak Park.
