Lion spirit ran high at the first official rooftop pep rally for the baseball team’s game against Tulane on the evening of Tuesday, Mar. 2.
The Lions baseball team in a joint effort with the Campus Activities Board hosted a pep rally that provided students with school spirit a chance to support the baseball team and receive free giveaways. Some items given away included Campus Activity Board T-shirts, as well as half-sleeve baseball shirts. Free beverages and Cane’s chicken fingers were also provided.
According to senior criminal justice major Stephen Sommers, the rally was an idea of the Campus Activities Board. It was held on the fourth floor, the rooftop level, of the parking garage near Strawberry Stadium.
“My new boss at CAB, Nick, he was brainstorming about what to do to get more people to the game,” said Sommers. “I was like, ‘You know, people come out here already. Why don’t we do a school sponsored tailgate to get people out here?’ We’ve come up here before, but it’s always been unofficial.”
Along with the opportunity to hang out and support the baseball team, students had the opportunity to “Lion Up” with the new gear provided at the pep rally.
“We gave away 300 half-sleeve baseball t-shirts,” said Sommers. “Then we gave away, I think, 400 Raising Cane’s chicken fingers.”
Sommers also pointed out that the weather could have helped with the event’s turnout. The air was cool without being cold; The sky was partly cloudy against a golden evening, and a light breeze further cooled those in attendance.
“The weather is just awesome right now,” said Sommers. “We were actually worried last week because there was supposed to be an eighty percent chance of rain this afternoon, but it’s perfect today. This is a big game against Tulane, and we wanted a good turnout.”
Approximately 300 fans were in attendance, ensuring the rally had a strong turnout and a life of its own long after it opened at 4 p.m. Other events have been held on the rooftop, but this is one of the first official ones this year.
“The turnout here has been pretty good, I think,” said Sommers. “It’s our first tailgate, we just got a new director. He’s still getting used to things at Southeastern, but I think the turnout here is pretty good. Because people have come out before and done this, like Sunday, we did a mixer. It was a Greek event, a mixer between Kappa Sigma and Sigma Sigma Sigma. We probably only had about 30 to 40 people here. We just hung out, but this is like, a real Southeastern thing.”
