Quarterback Justin Alo is only in his second year at the university and is the starting quarterback. Alo was the backup quarterback for his first season with the Lions but came to step into the role this year. Just this year, Alo threw for 1777 passing yards. Before becoming a lion, Alo led Mt. San Antonio College to the California Community College championship where he earned MVP honors in the title game where he finished the season with 3,263 yards passing and 24 touchdowns. Alo will be finishing his undergrad in Summer of 2017. Then, he will return in December to walk at graduation.

The Lion’s Roar: How was this season for you?

Justin Alo: A great and successful season. We turned our record around from 4-7 to 7-4. Myself and a lot of players know there was still a lot football left to be played with this 2016 group had we got into the playoffs. All in all, it went great with this group of guys. The way we finished against Nicholls. It will be remembered because we brought back the River Bell to where it belongs.

TLR: What has been a memorable moment playing football for Southeastern?

JA: Our Hail Mary pass to Brandon Acker who scored the game winning touchdown against McNeese within our own redzone with the final seconds falling to zero. The stadium went crazy and it was my first time experiencing a fourth quarter comeback win on the last play.

TLR: Is there anything you wish you had done differently?

JA: Take advantage of the opportunities and prioritizing my time off the field. Build more relationships with more players, teachers and just people from the Hammond, SELU community.

TLR: What made you attend Southeastern and what have you enjoyed about being a Lion?

JA: The opportunity to take my talents to a Division. I university. A great coach always told me that I deserve success and to play Division I football. I felt this was the right decision but also a big challenge for me and that’s to be outside my comfort zone. I’ve really enjoyed the people, the hospitality and the food. Louisiana has a slower pace of living compared to Oakland or Los Angeles but I like that a lot. Hammond alone is a great place to play football and continue your college career.

TLR: Who or what got you started playing football?

JA: My father. He had my brothers and sister signed up for all year around sports since we were in elementary.

TLR: How long have you been playing football?

    JA: Since the 2nd-3rd grade.

TLR: Is there any other sport that you enjoy?

    JA: Rugby, track.

TLR: What do you like to do in your free time while you are not playing football?

JA: Learning to become successful, being productive and play video games.

TLR: You are from California, is there anything you have missed while being in Louisiana?

JA: Mainly my family, L&L Hawaiian Barbecue and my church in Compton.

TLR: How different is your hometown from Hammond?

JA: I’d say a lot different, there’s definitely more going on where I’m from. A lot more things to do and get involved with good, bad, and I feel like Hammond is more of a hometown that supports SELU and other activities, events in town.

TLR: Does your family come to Hammond to watch you play or just to visit?

JA: Yes they do, any chance they get and are able to come that week.

TLR: Do you have any siblings? If so, do they enjoy playing sports?

JA: I have two brothers, James and Ryan, and one sister, Adrienne, and yes they did enjoy playing during their time.

TLR: Who is your biggest inspiration?

    JA: God.

TLR: Any words of encouragement for young children who may have fears or worries about playing sports?

JA: If you can think it, you can achieve it. What are you willing to sacrifice to be great? Figure out your motivation and what makes you happy. In due time, the answers you will be looking for will reveal itself. Be patient and remember to say your prayers. Focus on you.
