The Lady Lions soccer team ended their two-match road trip this weekend after tying with both Texas A&M University- Corpus Christi and Houston Baptist University in the Southland Conference. The two draws meant the Lady Lions have an overall record of 3-6-3.

The first game against the Corpus Christi Islanders was a defensive battle for the most part.

“The hardest part of the game is to score goals, else games would be pretty high scoring,” said Head Coach Christopher McBride. “They defended well. We had some good chances. The keepers had a great game, and they stopped the goal from going into the back of the game.”

McBride was pleased to see the turnout during the away game and also see some familiar faces.

“We had a really good crowd there,” said McBride. “We had some of our own fans travel to the game to come watch us. They were very alert and supported us. They were louder than their fans.”

Freshman goalkeeper Michaela Hawthorn made four saves in recording her fourth shutout of the season. Sophomore forward Amber Marinero took a team-high four shots, three on goal. Junior defender Christina Cutura sent one of her three shots on goal.

Redshirt junior Maggie Ramsey’s two shot tied her for sixth with Becca Weingartner on the Lady Lions career list with 158.

The Lady Lions ended Houston Baptist’s impressive three-game win-streak in their second game. After conceding the first goal in the 25th minute, the first leveller was produced from an own goal, after a great run from Ramsey.  The second goal was conceded after Baptist’s Autumn Wildung blocked a clearing pass by goalkeeper Hawthorn into the top of the net.

The second leveller was produced off a cross from freshman forward Jessi Cooper in the 79th minute after freshman defender Maja Blanck sent it to the right corner of the net, marking her first goal for the Lady Lions.

“I can’t imagine a better way of scoring my first goal as a Lion, especially since we were facing that great team on their home field after a long weekend,” said Blanck. “I had a lot to prove, and I am very happy that I could contribute to this tie and that one point we get to bring with us back home.”

The Lady Lions will play Lamar University, who is currently on a three game undefeated streak, on Friday, Oct. 6 at 7 p.m. in Strawberry Stadium. The match will be Student Spirit with the first 100 students in attendance receiving an authentic soccer scarf.
