Pot throwing and printmaking highlight Art Night

The Visual Arts Society (VAS) in collaboration with various art clubs hosted Art Night which allowed students, artistic or not, to enjoy different art activities. The event was held in the Art Quad on Nov. 1 at 6 p.m.
Students could visit different areas of the Art Quad and observe as ceramics art teacher, Denis Siporiski threw a 150-pound pot or 3-D design teacher, Jamie Alonzo made a face jug.  The pot throwing had never been tried before at previous Art Nights and was proved to be a positive addition.
“The pot throwing is successful,” said Haley Cutrer, a junior ceramics major and president of VAS. “We have a group watching, which we don’t normally have.”
Many students ventured upstairs in Clark Hall to have a selection of different designs printed on a T-shirt before their very eyes.
“I want to see the Palmetto Press,” said Kayla Richardson on the subject, a junior marketing and visual arts major. “I want to see how they make T-shirts.”
Students could have a design printed on a T-shirt for $8 or for $5 if they brought their own shirt. All the proceeds will be used towards the activities and events hosted by VAS.
“It is hot and sweaty work but comes with great results,” said Nick Salvetti, a freshmen graphic design major who was volunteering for Art Night by helping make the prints.
A popular and fun station for many students was the Cindy Sherman photo shoot. Every Art Night there is a different variation of a photo shoot. The last Art Night involved shooting awkward family photos; this year VAS decided to do a play off of Cindy Sherman, a photographer who dresses up as her own subject.
“She has all these things to become these other people,” said Cutrer about Sherman’s work. “We have a lot of makeup and wigs to mimic that.”
Evan Thomas, a junior photography major took the pictures of students as they dressed in elaborate costumes. Art students donated the props for the shoot.
Another station allowed students to paint a cup. They could paint it in any design they chose and can pick the cup up towards the end of the week.
“I like how it encourages people who are not art majors to be artistic,” said Aubrey Colombo, a sophomore psychology major. “It gets everyone in touch with their artistic flow.”
Art Night is put on every semester and students are encouraged to come out and enjoy the different things available. For more information about Art Night and other events put on by VAS visit www.facebook.com/sluvas.
