The Student Government Association (SGA) and the Arts and Lectures Committee will sponsor the “Margaret, Mathilde, Mary and More” concert, which includes a performance by the 2010 Southeastern Alumnus of the Year Donald George. He will be accompanied by Lucy Maro on the piano.
The concert, part of the Fanfare season, will be held on Monday, Oct. 8 at 7:30 p.m. in the Pottle Auditorium, and is part of the department of Fine and Performing Arts free guest artist recital series.
“It is rare that our students have the opportunity to hear one of Southeastern’s most prominent and successful alumni return to perform in our own Pottle Auditorium,” said Kenneth Boulton, Fine and Performing Arts interim department head.
Margaret Lang, Mathilde Kralik and Mary McAuliffe are three female composers that will have their work featured in the recital. Margret Lang is a 19th century American composer, and Mathilde Kralik, also from the 19th century, is an Austrian composer. Mary McAuliffe is an Irish born composer who has had her work showcased at universities around the world.
According to a university press release, the inspiration for the music used in the recital came from George and Maro digging in old musical archives.
George has had success in the music industry and in teaching throughout the country. He is currently an associate professor of voice at State University of New York, Postdam’s The Crane School of Music and graduated from Southeastern in 1967 with a bachelor’s degree in vocal performance. Maro has worked with George before, as they have done previous performances together and put on master classes and workshops. She is currently an associate professor at West Virginia University. George is happy to be back and taking part in Fanfare.
“Donald George represents the very best of Southeastern’s formidable music tradition, as well as someone who is striving to give back to our program in so many meaningful ways,” Boulton said.
