The department of Languages and Communication is seeking to engage students and community members in foreign languages at this year’s Fanfare by hosting the Foreign Film series.
The Foreign Film series is an event that will take place over four weeks at 5:30 p.m. in the Student Union Theater starting on Oct. 4 and ending on Oct. 25. Presented at each screening will be a foreign film that showcases a different language that students can learn while at Southeastern.
“What we like when we pick movies, is we like to enrich or compliment what [students] are learning in class,” said event organizer Aileen Mootoo, a foreign language instructor.
The films for this year include a 2004 German film called “Kebab Connection,” a 2001 Italian film called “The Son’s Room,” a 1992 Spanish film called “Mi querido Tom Mix” and a 2008 French film called “Welcome to the Sticks.”
Mootoo hopes that the films will be enjoyable and will also help students become more immersed in their language studies in all areas including culture, linguistics and comprehension.
“It’s for the community at large to come and enjoy these movies so they are subtitled,” said Mootoo. “But for a person who’s taking French and watching these movies, even though they are subtitled, what can they understand?”
When choosing the films, Mootoo said that consideration is taken to make sure that the movies are appropriate even though they are R-rated so that people who come to watch them are not offended.
“All of the movies are rated R, except for the Spanish one, mainly for language,” Mootoo said. “It’s really hard to get around that, so we make it clear so that people can choose not to go in case they might be offended.”
According to the Internet Movie Database (IMBD), “Kebab Connection” is a German comedy movie that follows Ibo, a young Turkish-German man, whose dream is to make the first German Kung-Fu movie. After finding out his girlfriend is pregnant, Ibo must deal with the pressures of parenthood and the hatred of his father.
“The Son’s Room” is an award-winning Italian film that follows a family’s emotional trauma following the death of their son.
“Mi querido Tom Mix” is a Spanish film about a Mexican girl who dreams of meeting the cowboy hero Tom Mix. After the girl encounters a group of bandits, Mix arrives to save the day and fulfill her dreams.
“Welcome to the Sticks” is a French film that follows a post office administrator, Philippe Adams, who is desperate to help his depressed wife move to a seaside town. When Adams is caught red-handed in a scam, he is forced to move to a distant town where they speak an incomprehensible dialect.
