Ceramics Club teaches kids ‘the ins and outs’ of pottery

On Wednesday, Sept. 28, the Ceramics Club of Southeastern hosted a hands-on pottery day at the Southeastern Lab School to show the children ‘the ins and outs’ of the arts and ceramics, according to Lab School art teacher Denise Tullier-Holly.

“The art classroom gives the children a chance to interact with each other in a more relaxed way,” said Tullier-Holly, who loves being able to share these types of experiences with the children.

The purpose of the day was to give the students an environment to learn and play at the same time.

“We just want the kids to have fun and do something they may have never tried before,” said Ceramics Club President Sara Sherman. “[The club’s] been together for nine years, and we have been working with the lab school for about three years.”

“The kids love having a place they can come to and be themselves, and I’ve been doing this for years so it’s always a good day,” said Tullier-Holly, who has been with the lab school since August of 1994.

“The students consider me somewhat of a fixture at the school,” said Tullier-Holly. “I’ve always been here for them.”

Joined with Tullier-Holly and Sherman were members Andrew Pullman, Elizabeth Hecht and Jason Carazo. According to Sherman, the Ceramics Club came out to teach the students how to throw on a pottery wheel.

Students who participate in the after-school art club were able to test their skills at thrown pottery. The kids made jars, coffee mugs and sketched designs into clay.

“It’s a good way for the kids to get into being creative,” said Sherman, “I’ve been president for a year now, and I love doing this with the students. It’s an enjoyable experience.”

The Ceramics Club will soon be hosting other events on campus. On Nov. 28-29, they will have a Christmas sale with handmade pots and other pieces, and a ceramics show will be held in the Hyde Gallery inside Clark Hall from Nov.14-22.

Another way the club will contribute to campus life will be during Homecoming Week. On Nov. 5, they will have a booth set up in Friendship Circle, where they will conduct a workshop similar to the one at the lab school, focusing on pottery and hand building.
