Hailing from Zachary, Louisiana, Cullen Davezac, majoring in business management, is the lead singer and rhythmic guitarist for The Broken Rubber Band. The band was formed in early 2010, when Davezac met bass player Carson Ducote. The two musicians have been writing music together ever since.
“At first, I never planned on singing for the band at all,” said Davezac. “I met my bass player through a mutual friend and he and I started writing music and jamming together. Through Craigslist we finally found, after going through many lead guitar players, our final lead guitarist Randall Head and our drummer Chad Byrd.”
Davezac will always consider Zachary home, but currently the band is based in Baton Rouge, where the band has played at several venues including The North Gate Tavern, Fred’s in Tigerland and the Varsity Theatre. On Wednesday, Oct. 5 they will perform in the Hammond area with a show at Cate Street Pub.
Their signature sound of jazz, blues and rock-a-billy mixed with hard rock allows them to cater to a vast audience, and the band’s versatility is shown through the myriad of instruments they play. Besides a guitar, drums and bass, a banjo, piano and occasionally the harmonica are also used.
“I play rhythm guitar, cello, violin and I sing,” said Davezac. “I’m real big into just picking up the guitar and singing and writing what comes to my head.”
Some of Davezac’s influences include Ray Charles, Ray LaMontagne, The Devil Makes Three and Aerosmith.
“The first eight years of my life were all Aerosmith,” said Davezac. “They don’t get the credit they deserve, but it is Ray LaMontagne’s voice that [I think] is just classic,” said Davezac.
Some of the band’s original songs like “Used to Being Lonely” and “Ain’t Got No Money” are currently available on their Facebook page for listening.
Davezac stated the best part about being in a band is the people he meets on tour. Although the band is in its beginning stages, they hope to eventually tour around the country. Right now they are in the midst of promoting their self-recorded music, produced at The Music Shed in New Orleans.
“That’s where we get all of our CDs printed,” said Davezac. “The studio is rented by the day, so whatever band funds we have comes from playing shows. After shows we sell CDs and our music is on iTunes too.”
