Jarreau’s reign as Miss Southeastern ending

The Campus Activities Board (CAB) has begun its annual search for the new Miss Southeastern. Interest meetings have been held, and now the contestants begin to develop their platform and perfect their talent.
On Sept. 15 at 7 p.m. in the Pottle Music Building Auditorium, Miss Southeastern 2012 Jennifer Jarreau will pass her crown to a new winner.
At the meetings, the women get the bulk of their information about the pageant process. They learn what is expected of them, and what happens if they win.
“In the interest meetings we basically just layout what is entailed in the pageant and then we explain what happens to the winner after they win the pageant. They also sign a contract making sure they know what exactly is expected out of them,” said Todd McElroy, coordinator for CAB. “The winner will receive a clothing allowance, scholarships and get to do various appearances on campus.”
CAB has sponsored the Miss Southeastern pageant since 1970 and it has been a long standing tradition. Each winner of the Miss Southeastern pageant has the opportunity to travel to Monroe, La. to compete in the Miss Louisiana pageant.
With all the public appearances, the winner will need to look their best so CAB provides a $1,000 clothing allowance. However, the winner does not receive the allowance or scholarship until the following year.
“That’s what I’ve inherited,” said McElroy. “That’s just always how it’s been.”
Contestants must have a 2.5 GPA, be in good standing with the University and be a full time student. In the pageant, each contestant will have the chance to show off their talent and use a platform to promote issues close to their heart and school.
“The framework for this year’s pageant is the same as it has always been in the past. We do the fitness segment, evening gown, private interview, on-stage questions and the talent segment to complete the pageant,” McElroy said.
