    Sax students perform chamber music

The Saxophone Studio at Southeastern hosted “An Evening of Saxophone Chamber Music” last Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in Pottle Auditorium.
Under the direction of Dr. Richard A. Schwartz, the instructor of saxophone and director of jazz studies, students joined together to perform a variation of pieces.
“The students performed very well and were ‘super-charged’ from the recent visit of world class saxophonist Dr. Connie Frigo,” said Schwartz. “In fact, they have been working on this music since the beginning of the semester, using almost all of their free time.”
To start the recital, four students and Schwartz came together to perform from David Maslanka’s “Recitation Book.”  The melodies from “Recitation Book” include “Der du bist drei in einigkeit” meaning “you who are three in one,” “Jesu meine Freude” meaning “Jesus my joy,” “Ecco moriro dunque” meaning “Look!  My Death is Near!” and “O Salutaris Hostia” meaning “O Salvation’s Victim.”
“We’ve been working a while,” said Erica Reine, soprano saxophone.  “Our instructor suggested [the song] to us and we went with it.  I like the music program.  Dr. Schwartz is really good.”
Vitalie Gumeniuc was on soprano saxophone, Steven Bridges was on alto saxophone, Zakk Garner was on tenor saxophone and Jonathan Lyons was on baritone saxophone.
Angelisa Allen on alto saxophone joined with Samantha Balfantz on alto saxophone to perform “Bop Duet #10” and “Bop Duet #37” by Bugs Bower.
According to Schwartz, the students were solely responsible for selecting the evening’s repertoire.
“The students selected the music and I approved,” said Schwartz. “It is always a pleasure working with such caring and dedicated students.”
Four students, Reine, Dakota Jenkins on alto saxophone, Justin Dardenne on tenor saxophone and Matthew Kennedy on baritone saxophone, ended the night with a performance of Eugene Bozza’s “Andante” for saxophone quartet.
“It was for the experience, for the performance experience,” said Reine about the purpose of the recital.
