High school students receive professional training experience

This summer, the Division of Extended Studies at Southeastern is hosting its second "Zoom into Careers," intended to use the experiences and expertise of area professionals and Southeastern faculty to give participating high school students an opportunity to explore future career options.
The event is scheduled for June 21-24, with workshops that will take place from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.
"It offers high school students the opportunity to get some professional training in a discipline that they're interested in, and it gives Southeastern an opportunity to get these students on campus to our facilities," said Tom Dawsey, coordinator of special projects for Extended Studies.
For the first time ever, "Zoom into Careers" is offering the students the chance to experience what it is like to be a college student living on campus.
"This year we're gonna add an opportunity for students to stay on campus in the dorms for the workshops held on the main campus," said Dawsey.
Staying overnight includes room, meals and evening activities.
The various fields of study in which students will gain knowledge and experience include culinary arts, inventing, photography and television.
"Participants will learn the mechanics of these careers and explore the specific industry and other careers within that industry," said Joan Gunter, assistant vice president for Extended Studies. "Instructors will integrate real-world scenarios so students have a better understanding of the career and industry."
The workshops will be held on Southeastern's main campus in Hammond, Southeastern's St. Tammany Center in Mandeville, La., and the Livingston Parish Literacy and Technology Center in Walker, La. Southeastern colleges will host the workshops, providing faculty and resources to help guide the students.
The college of education and human development is associated with "Zoom into Culinary Arts," to be held in White Hall. According to Gunter, those involved with this workshop will have the opportunity to create a gourmet meal to share with others.
The college of science and technology is holding "Zoom into Inventing" in Anzalone Hall. According to Gunter, inventing participants will create and design mechanical parts or concepts in 3D and post the final projects on YouTube.
The college of arts, humanities and social sciences is associated with "Zoom into Photography." This workshop will be held at both the St. Tammy Center in Mandeville and the Livingston Parish Literacy and Technology Center in Walker. Participants will have the opportunity to display photographs in an art show, according to Gunter.
The college of arts, humanities and social sciences is also associated with "Zoom into Television," to be held at the Southeastern University Center. "Zoom into Television" participants will be shown how to create a 15-minute newscast or documentary to be posted on YouTube.
