The 2012- 2013 theatre season has reached its halfway mark. Last semester we saw the tragedy “The Bacchae” by Greek playwright Euripides, and an original play, “Murderous Innocent,” which shocked audiences with its incestuous nature, written by Tommy Jamerson. The first play of the spring season is filled with seduction and lies while the second play has a twist to it in the second act.
“Our first show is ‘Blood Wedding,’ and that is a Spanish tragedy. It deals with dueling families, and the bride decides to leave her husband for someone from the other family,” said theatre instructor Chad Winters.
“Blood Wedding” also explores issues of desire, ritual, repression and commitments of a rural Spanish community. It will be directed by Samuel Sparks and runs from Feb. 26 to March 1.
“Baby with the Bathwater” is written by Christopher Durang and will be directed by Winters. The play centers around a couple who are new to parenthood and how their child is not who she seems to be. It will run April 16 through April 19.
“We basically do some reading of plays, and after a discussion we choose which one is right for the season. Also Frederico Garcia Lorca is a pretty well known Spanish playwright, so the people in the department know who these writers are,” Winters said. “So we try to bring on classic works done by playwrights that they should have knowledge of.”
In the second play of the season, audience members can expect a twist, which will make them think about sexuality and gender.
“‘Baby with the Bathwater’ is written by a very popular comedic playwright,” Winters said. “It’s about the trials and tribulations of parenthood, and it goes to the far extreme, but it’s a very funny piece. It looks at raising kids, talks about identity. We find out that the couple’s child, named Daisy, is not who we think she is.”
Auditions are on March 4 at the Vonnie Borden Theatre, and students who wish to audition should prepare a one to two minute comedic monologue. For more information, contact the box office at 985-549-2115.
