George, Mauro present musical as part of Fanfare

The Department of Fine and Performing Arts will present a musical recital, “Margaret, Mathilde, Mary and More,” on Oct. 8 in Pottle Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. for Fanfare. The recital is featuring 2010 alumnus of the year, Donald George on tenor, who will be partnered with Lucy Mauro on piano.
“I anticipate that this recital will be an extraordinary occasion for our students, faculty and entire community to hear one of Southeastern’s genuine Hall of Fame vocalists in his long awaited return to Pottle Auditorium,” said Dr. Kenneth Boulton, Fine and Performing Arts interim department head.
Along with the world-renowned performers, George and Mauro, vocalist Margaret Ruthven Lang, Mathilde Von Kralik, Mary McAuliffe and others will take the stage. George and Mauro, in anticipation for the recital, looked through archives when they came across the names of Lang, Kralik and McAuliffe.  All three come from different countries and different eras, but each have a talent-risen musical background.
George, an associate professor of voice at State University of New York, earned his bachelors degree at Southeastern Louisiana University in vocal performance in 1967.  He gained his masters from Louisiana State University and has since performed with famous conductors and artists around the world.
“Ever since Donald George was selected as Southeastern’s 2010 Alumnus of the Year, he has re-established a generous and lasting connection with our university and music program,” said Boulton.  “This recital is the latest gesture on his part to impact our students’ lives and prospective careers.”
Mauro, an associate professor at West Virginia University, has received her bachelors, masters and doctorate from John Hopkins University where she is a graduate of the Peabody Conservatory.  Since partnering with George, they have performed together throughout the United States and overseas.
George and Mauro have done multiple performances at universities, concerts and festivals. They have conducted classes and published articles together in “Die Tonkunst, American Music Teacher” and more.
“This will be my first occasion to hear Donald and Lucy perform in person, though I am well aware of their many acclaimed recordings,” said Boulton.  “Their artistry is truly world-class.”
The recital will be free.  For more information, call the Department of Fine and Performing Arts at 985-549-2184.
